White & green cloth covers with beautiful gilt decorations. Some soil and foxing to the white portion and spine toned. Cloth worn at the corners and spine ends with very light board exposure. Light insect predation on the spine. Board tips lightly bumped. Beautifully decorated two-tone and gilt endpapers. Top edge gilt. One front prelim torn out. Most likely lithographed color frontispiece on heavy card stock. Some pages have soil and foxing, mostly in the margins. Gutter cracked behind the title page.

Leather edges and corners are scuffed and rubbed as is the spine, however new sheen is still present in places. Very light moisture or humidity damage on the endpapers toward the edges with no obvious penetration into textblock. Highlights in ink first half. Minimal board exposure at the tips. Top edge soil, ink speckling on the edges, with a few small possible stains. Volume 25, numbers 1-12. Brown leather, gilt titles.

Pages slightly toned, gilt spine title slightly weak.

This is a bit of a baffler. Six issues bound into one volume, with an index and continuous pagination. Binding appears to be fairly new while the textblock is clearly old. However, the pages are extremely clean and have been washed, trimmed, and restored, with only minor evidence of foxing and mild soil. Several pages have indentations and one page has several tears and is fairly brittle.

Exterior spine hinges are worn yet still intact, and there is some edge chipping. Gilt titles on spine barely legible. Considerable rubs and scuffs. Page 4 misiing 1 inch corner.

Wear at the extremities. Slight board exposure at the corners with some fraying, and fraying at the top and bottom of the spine. Light water spot on the front cover about 2 inches, and two smaller damp stains on the back board. The spine has some light creases and there's a crease on the back board. Former owner's name and date, 1913, on the front pastedown and gift inscription in pencil on the ffep. Binding has some sag, with webbing exposed in places and the textblock edges are somwhat uneven.

Some water damage to first 40 pages less than one inch from edge. Two inches of back cover and 1 inch of front edge, gnawed. Tooled cover is soiled, has gold seal in the middle front and back. Cover is soiled and stained, not terribly visible due to dark blue-black color. Spine frayed at bottom edge and corners worn to the boards. Has been repaired in previous life. Faded gilt letters on the spine upside down as if bound by a Brit. Research and or photo copies sold separately. May have pages missing from the front as the first chapter starts at page 16. There is no table of contents, but nothing missing from what I can tell from the index.

Pages are very clean otherwise.

Oxford Edition tan or ochre with black decorations. Front and back hinges are cracked and the front hinge has been repaired. The book is not dated, but the new preface is 1831, and there's a gift inscription on the decorated endpapers dated 1899. Pages are browning and somwhat brittle. The book has wear at the extremities and the tips are bumped and starting to fray with the board exposed at one corner. The bottom of the spine has a tiny tear and light wear.
